It never fails to surprise me how often people suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder wait endlessly for the right tools for healing while no one provides them.
But I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. In my own experience (I’ve had about 8 solid years of therapy in my life – that’s a lot of therapists!), there are many therapists who believe that in order to help someone heal, all you need to do is be a good listener.
I say that’s hogwash!
What I know from almost 2 decades of work as a therapist is that when someone finally comes to therapy, they have already exhausted other options. That is, they’ve talked to plenty of “good listeners” and found that having someone listen simply isn’t enough!
